# Where In The World Do We Need Nature? > More than half the world lives in cities. They need nature just as much. **Published by:** [BASIN Dispatches](https://dispatches.basin.global/) **Published on:** 2024-04-02 **Categories:** biodiversity, investing in nature, resilience, risk reduction, place **URL:** https://dispatches.basin.global/where-in-the-world-do-we-need-nature ## Content Biodiversity and the many benefits nature provides is, of course, not limited to the Amazon, the Congo, other equatorial regions or unique geomorphology. Urban areas and the people who live there rely on functioning ecosystems and the water and carbon cycles just as much as biodiversity hotspots. According to the UN, 56% of the world's population, or 4.4 billion people, live in cities. By 2050, 68% will live in urban areas. How can we ensure clean air and water, health and well-being and good quality of life for this many people? By protecting and restoring urban ecosystems, of course! While the BASIN Protocol works anywhere in the world, in all 14 ecosystems, BASIN is committed to ensuring as much natural capital as possible while also positively affecting the greatest number of people.Strategically Selected MetrosToday we are excited to announce thirty cities of focus. With over 10,000 cities to choose from we put careful thought into the where and why. The detailed selection criteria as well as the list of the next 40+ cities we will be expanding to is available in the BASIN member section below.Selected Metropolitan Statistical AreasAfter lengthy deliberation, these MSA's were selected for the initial deployment of the BASIN Protocol. If you are in these regions, have friends or family there, or special connections to these places, please reach out. There are tons of opportunities for collaboration. We are actively seeking Ensurance Agents for each region as well as properties and projects for Ecological Ensurance.PLACE PLACE PLACEIt is our belief that general theses like "Save the Planet", "Protect the Earth" or "Conserve Biodiversity" just don't and won't cut it in the face of a $1T per year problem. The polycrisis will be solved place, by place, by place on purpose by people. These selected regions are linchpins in the multigenerational work ahead.BASIN Member ContentCities / MSA's were selected based on criteria including but not limited to:C40 CitiesGlobal Covenant of Mayors (GCOM)Urban Nature DeclarationUrban Nature AcceleratorCool Cities NetworkUrban Flooding NetworkClean Air AcceleratorEquity Pledge AcceleratorClimate RiskReal Estate ValuesRule of Law & Legal InfrastructureDemographics & SocioeconomicsPopulation DensityIndustry & EconomyGeographic & Geomorphic Characteristicsand of course BASIN Member connections and relations!Phase Two CitiesHealth & Well Being is tied to Nature ## Publication Information - [BASIN Dispatches](https://dispatches.basin.global/): Publication homepage - [All Posts](https://dispatches.basin.global/): More posts from this publication - [RSS Feed](https://api.paragraph.com/blogs/rss/@basin-dispatches): Subscribe to updates - [Twitter](https://twitter.com/dot_basin): Follow on Twitter ## Optional - [Collect as NFT](https://dispatches.basin.global/where-in-the-world-do-we-need-nature): Support the author by collecting this post - [View Collectors](https://dispatches.basin.global/where-in-the-world-do-we-need-nature/collectors): See who has collected this post
